Our Impact

Since the KCP inception in 2017, the platform has achieved the following milestones in its efforts towards doubling production by 2022;

Development of Platform Strategic Plan 2018-2022

This was supported by the Global Coffee Platform (GCP) in collaboration with the other partners namely; the African Fine Coffee Association (AFCA), Rainforest Alliance- UTZ and Solidaridad East and Central Africa Expertise Center (SECAEC).

The strategic objectives of the Plan include;

  • Policy Dialogue and Engagement

  • Stakeholders Capacity Building

  • Collaboration, Partnership, and Networking

  • Knowledge sharing along the value chain

  • Institutional capacity building and strengthening

These objective forms a guide on the activities where partnerships and collaborations are developed and structured around. The Strategic Plan will create harmony, synergy, and coordination of all coffee stakeholders involved in the value chain to move beyond fragmented project investments.

THE NATIONAL STEERING COMMITTEE WORKING GROUP

The idea of working groups was arrived at by a 5-member Technical committee (TC) composed of representatives from Rainforest Alliance, African Fine Coffees Association, Solidaridad and Global Coffee Platform.

A sensitization meeting and planning workshop with National stakeholders was carried out whereby there was ownership of the coffee platform and culminated in constituting a National Steering Committee (NSC). NSC is the decision-making body of the platform and consists of 26 National delegates representing all coffee value chain actors in Kenya aimed at providing solutions to the challenges facing the coffee industry in Kenya.

ECONOMIC VIABILITY STUDY WORKING GROUP

In March 2018, the Platform in collaboration with the Global Coffee Platform and with funding from GIZ commissioned a study on economic viability of coffee farming in Kenya with the objective to deepen the understanding of the economic viability of coffee farming and key sustainability challenges in Kenya.. The outcome of the study would be used by a national stakeholder’s forum to identify and pilot key areas of focused interventions aimed at increasing coffee incomes to Kenyan coffee farmers.

THE NATIONAL COFFEE CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT WORKING GROUP

A Technical Committee on development of a National Sustainability Coffee Curriculum with the objective of updating and harmonizing of training material for coffee in Kenya was formed inAugust 2018. A team of 30 coffee experts under the guidance of 10 researchers from Coffee Research Institute worked in various retreats and review meetings resulting in development the Kenya Coffee Sustainability Manual (KCSM).

The new manual was officially launched in November 2019 during the IACO conference at Safari Park Hotel, Nairobi.

PILOT TRAINING USING KCSM

In 2019, pilot capacity development of both public and private extension staff started in 10 out of the 32 coffee growing Counties in Kenya using the new training manuals.

To date the platform has trained a total of 1002 coffee master trainers under the following categories in the 10 Counties:

  • 74 master trainers trained on Governance and prudential standards

  • 476 wet mill managers trained on coffee processing

  • 452 government and private Agricultural extension staff

The pilot trainers will train other extension staff , who in turn will train 100,000 coffee farmers with the aim of doubling coffee production by the year 2022.

IMPLEMENTATION OF PILOT CO-OP DATA CAPTURE SYSTEM

The Platform in collaboration with The State Department of Cooperatives and County Governments has implemented a pilot data capture system with the objective of strengthening institutional capacity. This is aimed at supporting online reporting of 250 farmer cooperatives as a pilot with an aim of upscaling this to all coffee cooperatives. This will improve on governance ultimately improving farmer incomes and lobby for development of improved legislation and policies, in line with recommendations and findings of the National Task Force on Coffee Sub-Sector Reforms.

NATIONAL PERIODIC POWER BREAKFASTS AND NATIONAL CECs MEETINGS

The Kenya coffee Platform has held three National Power Breakfast meetings to discuss key critical issues affecting the coffee industry under the following categories:

  • Breakfast to discuss women and youth involvement in coffee.

  • Breakfast to discuss coffee regulations and policy.

  • Breakfast to discuss coffee road map.

COUNTY PLATFORM FORMATION WORKING GROUPS

The County Governments in coffee producing areas are eager to work with the platform to drive their coffee agendas towards sustainability. Five Counties Namely Machakos, Kirinyaga, Murang'a, Nyeri and Nakuru have already formed County Coffee Platforms with the guidance of the National Coffee Platform. The national government’s political goodwill and the involvement of the county governments has had positive effects to the Kenya Coffee Platform. The Platform aims to facilitate 5 pilot Counties to form County coffee Platforms with the objective of fueling the National goal of doubling coffee production by the year 2022.

THE FARMER FIELD DAYS

The Platform participated in 3 farmer field days reaching over 10,000 farmers and being held in 5 Coffee Counties. The field days included:

  • Ruiru National Coffee Day in February attended by over 5000 coffee farmers

  • ICO Coffee day held in October 2018 at Kirinyaga County and attended by over 3000 farmers

  • Central Kenya Coffee Mills open day held in November 2019 at Nyeri and attended by 2000 farmers

  • Baringo County farmers field day in February 2019 and attended by about 100 farmers

The field days act as key avenues of knowledge transfer to farmers ensuring a sustainable coffee sector in Kenya.

THE NATIONAL COFFEE ROADMAP WORKING GROUP

The National Steering committee meeting held in Nairobi on 5th September 2019 identified the need for Kenya to develop a National Coffee Road map to steer the industry and double coffee production by the year 2025.

The meeting agreed to develop a harmonized National Coffee Road for Kenya and a National Coffee Roadmap subcommittee was appointed that has embarked on working to develop the road map.
